Philosophic

General Philosophy

Throughout the usage of colors, lines, shapes, structures, proportions, space, light and darkness our subconscious feelings can be expressed. Dreams inner images and nature are linked to these feelings. These images can act as a source of inspiration when painting, drawing and sculpting. In order to express our inner images it is not necessary to have any preconceived concepts or visualizations in mind as to what to create (paint, draw, sculpt). Through bio-energetic exercises, mediation and visualization techniques our inner inspiration naturally flows. Expression is facilitated with the usage of painting and drawing with (both) your left and right hand. Phenomenological observation techniques (J. W. von Goethe) and philosophy by C. Jung are used in combination with Anthroposophic human philosophy (R. Steiner) using two, three, four and seven standpoints. I also work with the chakra system (our body’s energy fields), grounding (exercises in grounding) and synchronized breathing/ body movement to stimulate the balance between both the left and right brain hemispheres. The whole work process will continually be directed towards the connection between fine art expression and harmonizing where the attention will be focused on you as a whole person. During a dialogue, I facilitate a conversation between you and your created images, where the meaning works through in the form of internal personal development. All facilitation is done without judgment and without aesthetic norms.

By painting, drawing and sculpting at Atelier Werkplaats Molenpad of inner images and model painting, the following aspects continuously play a role in the development of your paintings.

1. Material research, discovery and application. Buildup in acrylic paint of layers. Layers can be a combination of thick/ pasty application and lighter glazing. Relief can be builtup with painting with clay, paint and collages of mixed materials. In developing transformational painting the continuation of layers, rather than keeping specific areas of the painting untouched, is key to allow the final image to exist from a naturally developed process.

2. Shape painting, drawing and sculpting of the human figure seen from figuration and abstraction with moving model. Quick sketching of the primary shapes and composition such as torso or intact figure. Working within lightness, darkness and color which essentially the basis of painting.

3. The development of creativity and expressive capacity. The development of a non-linear painting process. Application of this type of multiple processes is quite uncommon for many. The practical development of painting in this way is experienced in a completely new way. It allows you to discover a new imaging language through applying certain exercises.
During open painting, where paintings are created without the use of external stimulus, paintings tend to be abstract. However you can also paint figuratively. The development of figurative painting to abstraction gets particular attention.

4. This gives a direct insight of two fundamental aspects that play a large role at Atelier
Werkplaats Molenpad.

A. Bringing your own creative fine art process in expression and movement by getting in contact with the materials and discovering the application of them for free expression.

B. Equal attention is placed on the free flow of combining image elements from your subconscious (inner) world with the conscious (external) world through visual observations from nature, figure and still life installations.

All courses pay attention to the continuous movement and connection between our inner and outer worlds of us as human-beings. The lemniscat shows this type of movement perfectly.
The development of this skill to integrate both inner and external worlds together is essential for artistic development as a whole. Even fine artists often only paint, draw or sculpt solely either from free interpretation of inner images or by replicating what exists externally. Needless to say, Fine Artists can get a lot out following this process for the further development of their work.. Through the process of abstraction in fine art, feelings can be expressed and simplified to the core, through a build up of the image.

The development of Emotional intelligence, where the head meets the heart, can be enhanced through numerous structured and free movement exercises that wake up specific creative processes. Many of exercises are offered in all courses at Atelier Werkplaats Molenpad, however there is more time for this work in the Fundamentals of Intuitive Painting course.
Model painting class has primarily been developed to give the opportunity to work with volumes and forms for painting, drawing and sculpting. There is plenty of freedom in how to paint the model. Color choice, figurative, abstract, or expressive to the point that the model is merely an inspiration to start from. You can also choose to develop to represent the model within anatomically correct dimensions.

Now and then i will give pointers about color usage, for example using a color palette of only earth colors or just black and white.
