The Concept

In the concept a new word appears by moving around the piece. As the viewer circles the piece the word BE and ME appear at different moments for contemplation. Through a series of compound curves the form creates an optical effect, which changes the typography.  Together a sentence is created.  In the first word BE, the ego is left behind. Being carries with it a unity to all of mankind, a connectedness. As the word ME is introduced, so is the ego and the idea of individuality. In the interplay of BE ME, is both the connection and disconnection with others.

This sculpture is interactive on a physical, emotional and thinking level. As architectural lettering, the play of words carry a complementary and contradicting meaning. In essence, things are not as they seem. The philosopher Hillel said, “If I am not for myself, who will BE for ME? But if I am only for myself, who am I? If not now, when?” Seeing and understanding language is essential to understanding ourselves and others.

In this sculpture I wanted to show the abstract transformation between two shifting states of being and awareness.

This project is one of a series that touch us three fold. Further ideas include 3 units of words such as BE ME to create larger sentence structure.
