Butterfly Transformation
CORTENSTEEL BUTTERFLY: Cortensteel mountable on solid base.
SCALE: 1.2 meters
LOCATION: Beeldentuin Cuijk
Transformation is a sculptural installation measuring 120 × 120 × 70 cm (47 × 47 × 27 inches), composed of two mirror-image symmetrical forms. Together, they create the illusion of fluttering wings; delicate, dynamic, and in motion.
From certain angles, the forms appear as two distinct butterflies. From others, they dissolve into one. This visual merging invites reflection on duality, connection, and unity.
The butterfly is a timeless metaphor for transformation, vulnerability, and beauty born through change. In Transformation, that metaphor becomes tactile. The sculpture speaks softly of identity and togetherness, reminding us that separation is often just a matter of perspective. At its core, it expresses a simple truth:
We are all one.
The numbers located on this sculpture are intentionally left from the original steel markings. The numbered “tattoos” on the butterfly sculpture represent the victims who were dehumanized and assigned numbers in concentration camps. By preserving these steel markings on the sculpture, it serves as a poignant reminder of the horrors and the importance of never forgetting such acts of genocide. It is a call to action to honor and learn from history to prevent similar atrocities from happening again.
This piece was on exhibit for 2 years from May 2023-2025 in Beeldentuin Cuijk. It is for purchase.
