Wool Code

Suspended between two trees, Wool Code forms an irregular line within the forest. Strips of felted wool wrapped around a rope create a rhythm reminiscent of a barcode — a human system of identification set within a landscape that resists classification.

The installation brings together the ordered and the organic. From a distance, the hanging forms appear to carry a coded message; up close, their individual fibres, knots and irregular edges reveal the physical process of their making.

Wool originates in nature but is transformed through human hands. Returned to the forest, it responds again to the natural world: moving with the wind, absorbing moisture and changing through exposure. The work is never entirely fixed. Weather, light and time continually interrupt and rewrite its code.
